Handling Schema Drift in Semi-Structured Data

Modern APIs, Kafka topics, and webhooks frequently change their JSON structure without prior notification. Fields get renamed, nested objects flatten, or new arrays appear.

Traditional schema registries reject unexpected payloads, causing consumer crashes. An AI-driven schema discovery engine evaluates incoming anomalies, determines their compatibility, and generates migration DDL automatically.

Code Example: Generating PySpark StructType from Arbitrary JSON

import json
from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI()

def infer_spark_schema_from_json_sample(json_sample: dict) -> str:
    prompt = f"""
You are an expert PySpark engineer. Given this real-world JSON record, generate the complete, optimal PySpark `StructType` schema.
Ensure appropriate types (StringType, IntegerType, TimestampType, ArrayType, StructType, etc.) are accurately inferred.

JSON SAMPLE:
{json.dumps(json_sample, indent=2)}

Output ONLY valid Python code defining `schema = StructType([...])`. Do not include markdown code block syntax.
"""
    response = client.chat.completions.create(
        model="gpt-4o-mini",
        messages=[{"role": "user", "content": prompt}],
        temperature=0.0
    )
    return response.choices[0].message.content

sample_data = {
    "event_id": "evt_998124",
    "timestamp": "2026-10-25T07:30:00Z",
    "user": {
        "id": 1042,
        "email": "sarah.data@example.com",
        "roles": ["admin", "analyst"]
    },
    "metrics": {
        "latency_ms": 142.5,
        "is_cached": True
    }
}

spark_schema_code = infer_spark_schema_from_json_sample(sample_data)
print(spark_schema_code)

Best Practices for Automated Schema Evolution

  • Never auto-apply breaking column deletions: Only allow automated schema additions (additive evolution).
  • Run validation suites: Verify backward compatibility against past 30 days of data before applying table alterations.
  • Log schema diffs: Track schema evolution history in Git or your metadata catalog.
